Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide a deeper understanding of the experience of self-care through art therapy of infertility center care providers and to clarify the nature and meaning of the experience.

Methods: A phenomenological method of van Manen's point of view was adopted in the study. Participants were four nurses and one nurse assistant working at an infertility clinic. This study was conducted from March 2018 to May 2018 and collected data through interviews with participants after the end of group art therapy sessions.

Results: Five major themes and 17 essential themes were derived from the experience of self-care through art therapy of infertility center care providers. The five major themes were 'Facing the pressures of the work environment', 'Awareness of discomfort in patient gazes', 'Emotional burden as a result of the work environment', 'Experiencing my feelings while performing my job', and 'Frustration was solved by art work'

Conclusion: The images presented through art helped nurses to recognize their feelings and became an experience for improving self-care awareness and promoting growth.
